Escalandrum is a jazz sextet from Argentina that pays tribute to the legendary composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla, who was the grandfather of the group's leader and drummer Daniel \"Pipi\" Piazzolla. In 2011, they released their eighth album, Piazzolla Plays Piazzolla, which features 10 of Astor's most famous and beloved compositions, arranged and performed by Escalandrum with a modern and original twist.
The album showcases the virtuosity and creativity of the musicians, who blend elements of jazz, tango, rock, classical and folk music in their interpretations of Piazzolla's works. The result is a vibrant and dynamic homage that respects the essence and spirit of the master, while also adding new colors and textures to his musical legacy. Some of the highlights of the album include Lunfardo, a fast-paced and energetic piece that features a stunning saxophone solo by DamiÃn Fogiel; Buenos Aires Hora Cero, a melancholic and atmospheric ballad that evokes the city's nocturnal mood; and Libertango, one of Piazzolla's most famous and recognizable tunes, which Escalandrum transforms into a groovy and funky anthem.
Piazzolla Plays Piazzolla is a must-listen for fans of Astor Piazzolla, as well as for anyone who appreciates innovative and expressive music. The album is available on Spotify[^1^] [^2^] and Apple Music[^3^], as well as on CD and vinyl formats.Escalandrum is not only a tribute band, but also a creative and original ensemble that explores different genres and styles in their own compositions.
